(Closed) Obsessive Chocolat Desire – Blk 529 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10

(Obsessive Chocolat Desire has since ceased operations in Singapore.)

Yet another new ice-cream parlour had moved into Ang Mo Kio, being situated at the former premises of now-defunct Twenty Grammes at Blk 529 Ang Mio Kio Avenue 10 (Twenty Grammes’ original location along North Bridge Road is still in operation as of the date of writing.)

Taking over the former premises of the now-defunct branch of Twenty Grammes at Ang Mo Kio, Obsessive Chocolat Desire is a new ice-cream parlour that is situated in the hipster neighbourhood where The Pine Garden, Galettes and Nakhon Kitchen is situated at. Having taken over the shop space in entirety, the interior layout of the shop had not changed much since its days being Twenty Grammes; most of the furnishing and fittings are well-maintained and pretty much intact, though additional decals and detailing had been added to further distinguish the space under its current branding. Whilst the name suggests a focus on their chocolate-based items, Obsessive Chocolat Desire does serve up quite a number of ice-cream flavours that are not chocolate-based; a piece of good news for those who prefer a variety to choose from. The concept behind Obsessive Chocolat Desire does somehow remotely remind us of The Dark Gallery, which had since opened outlets at Millennia Walk as well as at Ngee Ann City; Obsessive Chocolat Desire does feature items being made from chocolate sourced from different origins; something rather prevalent in their selection of ice-cream available, whilst also offering a few chocolate-based desserts and bakes as well. Patrons can choose to pair their ice-cream together with waffles, brownies, aside from the usual cup/cone option; beverages offered includes chocolate drinks, as well as Japanese coffee and French tea as well as bottled soda.

(Sesame Waffle with Signature Belgium Dark 60% Ice-Cream, and Signature Ecuador Milk 40% Ice-Cream)

Since the focus here is on their chocolate-based items, we decided to go for two of the chocolate-based ice-cream flavours with a waffle. The waffle of choice was the Sesame Waffle, and after a round of tasting the chocolate-based ice-cream flavours available here, we found ourselves ordering the Signature Belgium Dark 60%, and the Signature Ecuador Milk 40%. Digging into the Sesame Waffle, one could argue that it is a pretty good waffle; the waffle wafts of buttermilk fragrance, whilst being plush in the interior and being crisp with a bite on the exterior. That being said, the Sesame Waffle seems to incorporate the use of sesame for its aesthetics rather than being for flavour; the Sesame Waffle tasted rather similar to any other plain buttermilk waffle, with the sesame element being pretty much non-existent when it comes to the flavour aspect. That being said, the star here is certainly the chocolate-based ice-cream; the Signature Ecuador Milk 40% is a crowd pleaser on its own with its balance of sweetness and bitterness of the chocolate here; smooth, rich and creamy without being overly sweetened. The Signature Belgium Dark 60% would appease to the purist who loves their chocolate bitter, however; exceptionally luscious and elegant, dark and intense, a sheer pleasure to the taste buds.

(Nitro Cold Brew Coffee)

Having skimmed through the selection of drinks that is available at Obsessive Chocolat Desire, the Nitro Cold Brew Coffee was an item that caught our attention. The Nitro Cold Brew Coffee is pretty smooth, rich and intense with its fruity notes, though probably not much of a difference from the usual cold brew as the foaminess was largely lost after being poured into the cup that it came with; perhaps more suited to be served in a pint to be had directly from without being transferred into another apparatus instead.

Putting its emphasis on chocolate, Obsessive Chocolat Desire is a spot that is rarely found in Singapore; a niche that has still got plenty of potentials to tap on, and especially uncommon for a cafe that is situated within the heartlands. While Obsessive Chocolat Desire does serve up a good variety of chocolate-based ice-creams, we do wish that they do offer a wider variety of bakes and pastries showcasing the chocolates of different origins to place its emphasis on chocolate even further. That being said, there is certainly some room for improvement; things such as the flavours of the Sesame Waffle that we have mentioned, and using more appropriate apparatus for the Nitro Cold Brew. We did, however, applaud on how Obsessive Chocolat Desire had not left the non-chocolate lovers behind, offering a good variety of non-chocolate desserts as well. Whilst being a spot situated a little far away from Ang Mo Kio town centre and thus, requiring a little bit of travelling for those who are keen to try, Obsessive Chocolat Desire is a destination that chocolate lovers should try at least once especially for the variety of chocolate-based ice-cream that they carry; all that while being a great chillout spot for residents in the area to enjoy.
