(Closed) Rakki Bowl – Beach Road

(Rakki Bowl has since ceased operations across all its location in Singapore.)

It seems that Candour Coffee is a spot that constantly collaborates with other F&B operators in order to serve an extended food menu — while Boru Boru had since moved out of Candour Coffee after its short pop-up stint a while ago (now known as Bou; serving up at Joe & Dough Marina Bay Link Mall), Rakki Bowl is the latest operator that has come on board to serve up Japanese Donburi alongside Candour Coffee’s offerings.

Sharing the same space as Candour Coffee, Rakki Bowl operates during lunch and dinner hours with a break in between daily. The menu served up at Rakki Bowl is pretty reminiscent to Boru Boru which had previously operated their pop-up at Candour Coffee some time back — Rakki Bowl offers five different Donburi dishes on the menu, which also compliments Candour Coffee’s hot food and beverage menu during the hours that they operate. All bowls are available in two sizes; Small and Large.

(Signature Truffle Wagyu Don – Small)

Going straight for their signature item, we ordered the Signature Truffle Wagyu Don (Small), which comes at a pretty decent portion size that could be considered a meal on its own; pretty value-for-money. Here, the wagyu beef is being roasted and sliced thinly, served atop a bed of warm Japanese rice before being drizzled with Italian truffle oil and a sweet-tasting sauce for some flavour. The beef slices were tender without being dry; easy to chew without being too veiny nor fatty whilst also not carrying any distinct gaminess in its flavour. The rice was also well-cooked; pearly and distinguishable by grain, the entire bowl was pretty on point for how the sweet-tasting sauce was well complimented with a whiff of truffle that perfumes both the rice and the wagyu beef slices that is aptly cut with a hint of garlicky flavour in between. Despite this being the “small” portion, there was a good ratio of meat to rice that could be savoured at the same time in each spoonful. Mix up the sous-vide egg in the middle for a silkier texture for the dish. Overall, quite a steal at $12.90.

(Spicy Salmon Don – Small)

We also went for the Spicy Salmon Don; the Spicy Salmon Don (Small) features cubes of raw salmon atop a bed of cold Japanese sushi rice; the salmon comes accompanied with chopped chilli padi speckled over. Whilst being a simple don that contains lesser elements as compared to the Signature Truffle Wagyu Don, the cubes of salmon comes chunky enough to provide enough bite, yet being fresh at the same time. The chili padi also delivers the promised spiciness here; a bite on the chili padi provides that instant kick of lethal spiciness that goes straight to the tongue and around the lips that is strangely shiok especially for how the heat was a contrast to the cold, slightly sweetened rice at the bottom. Again, despite us ordering the small portion for this item, the portion size was considered substantial for a full meal with the bowl containing a good portion of fish to rice that ensures that there is enough salmon to go around with the amount of rice beneath.

Overall, Rakki Bowl’s offerings seemed to be able to satisfy. The portions, despite us ordering the small portions for all of our dishes, came pretty generous; all of them being considerably filling while being served with a good level of quality that is respectable for the wallet-friendly prices that they are charging. While the offerings may be just limited to five options on the menu, the dishes seem to have covered most grounds with popular choices such as the Signature Truffle Wagyu Don and Bara Chirashi Don having their place in the menu, while the Teriyaki Chicken Don being the “safe” item that those who may not take beef or raw fish could fall back upon. With Japanese dons being served at such a quality and at such wallet-friendly prices, Rakki Bowl is a spot that would most probably attract the office workers within the City Hall/Beach Road neighbourhood for the days where one feel like sneaking a treat to reward themselves for the work week, as well as a spot for those who are into truffle wagyu beef dons to check out on weekends as well.
