The Betterfield – Blk 261 Waterloo Street (Closed)

(The Betterfield had since ceased operations at both The Treasury and Waterloo Street.)

Waterloo Street is one of the few streets which links Bugis to Dhoby Ghaut, though unlike the likes of Bencoolen Street and Queen Street, much of Waterloo Street still remains untouched from gentrification, with the other two seeing more changes especially in the F&B scene.

The Betterfield is one of the newest F&B tenants to have moved in to Waterloo Centre after its revamp. Located at the corner of the estate, The Betterfield is pretty hidden away from the public eye, though situated along the same stretch of shops as The Waterloo Times which had been around for a while now. Being more of a bistro than a cafe, expect sides such as Truffle Fries and mains from pasta to entrees such as Pulled Duck Burger and brunch items such as Eggs Benedicte available.

For the side, my dining partner and I decided to share The Ultimate Truffle Fries, which are truffle fries served with truffle mayo on the side. Fries were served warm and crisp, with a light truffle aroma perfuming each fry, though some would prefer it to be stronger. We were told that the truffle mayo consists of both black and white truffle, hence the mayo carried the same light truffle aroma to further enhance the flavours.

(Black Angus Ribeye – 200gm)

Having heard some ravings of the Black Angus Ribeye,  we decided to go for the 200gm portion with doneness set at medium rare. Portions may look small on the plate, but that is generally due to the thick cut of each slab of beef here. We loved the smoky flavours from the grill; so good we thought it actually did not need the Honey Mustard sauce on the side, and each slice is thick but melt-in-the-mouth chewy. Honey Mustard sauce was decent without being too strong in flavour so as to compliment rather than cover off the beef, and actually came with a whiff of truffle too, and the mesculun salad was also pretty decent. It is little wonder why so many rave about it, and given its price at $20 for a 200gm portion, this is really a steal.

(Duck Confit)

We also went for another item which is widely raved by regulars here; the Duck Confit. Served with blueberry compote, sauteed mushrooms and roasted potatoes, this dish was delightful especially given how crisp the skin of the Duck Confit was, and revealed the tender and succulent meat that came off the bone so easily when pulled apart. Not being too sweet, the blueberry compote carried no aftertaste either, and the roasted potatoes and sauteed mushrooms depsite seasoned with a wee bit too much pepper were fresh and comforting; a great change from the usual garden salad we are too used to seeing being served in cafes.

(Flat White)

The kind folks at The Betterfield also served us complimentary coffee, and we found their Flat White pretty up the mark with its medium body that has fruity notes. The Betterfield uses blends from Dutch Colony Coffee Co to ensure the quality of their coffee.

The Betterfield may be a new player in the F&B scene, especially situated near town with many other F&B options within its vicinity, but its young chef owner has the experience in the industry and his skills does shine through in the items we tried. It has delivered in both taste and quality and service was pretty decent. A place with much potential, we sincerely wish The Betterfield success in time to come!
