Replacing Sauce Bar, Mischief is a new bar at Esplanade Mall that not only serves alcohol, but also serves American Street Food as well.
Mischief is a collaboration between Mediacorp actresses Cynthia Koh and Michelle Chong, along with former DJ Daniel Ong (who owns Twelve Cupcakes, Cookies with Sid, Dulce & Sucre and Rookery, if you hadn’t heard by now) and the good folk behind both Tab and Suprette. Menu revolves around American favourites, which includes nachos, wings and calamari for those looking for a bite to go with the drinks, while those hungry can go for St Louis Ribs and Cubano too. A selection of desserts are also available here too.
(Chicken Waffle)
Both my dining partner and I are more into the food than the drinks, which I decided to go for the Chicken Waffle. Described with as “Crispy”, the waffle despite its crispness failed to impress; we felt that it was a tad floury in its flavour and quite airy inside; not quite the fluffy yet crisp waffle that we were looking for. We loved the “secret recipe” chicken thigh; the golden-brown fried boneless thigh meat was not only juicy, it came with a tinge of spiciness that it was marinated in; that “secret recipe” that induced the wow-factor. Maple Butter was decent, and the maple sauce that was provided at the side actually induced the right amount of sweetness to make the waffle taste pretty appealing.
(Philly Cheesesteak)
My dining partner was torn between the Good Ol’ Cheeseburger and the Hot Doggy Dawg; eventually we both decided on the Philly Cheesesteak instead because it sounded like the best of both worlds, not forgoing beef yet trading up for the soft baguette bun. Melted Cheddar sitting atop the beef fillet, this well-stuffed sub pretty much surpassed our expectations with beef that did not taste gamey, pillowy soft bun and that cheesy flavour with caramalised onions giving a small burst of sweetness.
(Muchos Churros)
Our choice for our dessert was clear cut; Muchos Churros was the very first item we saw on the menu so we knew we have to have that. Served with chocolate sauce and a berry compote, these Spanish fried fritters were pretty lacking of flavour on their own, as though coated with icing sugar rather than actual sugar and seemed missing of its cinnamon goodness. The dips were the saving grace though, especially the chocolate one which was thick yet bittersweet and came in generous portions. Berry compote was also pretty decent; sweetened fruits such as raspberries, blueberries and strawberries were used, and despite its laugh odd combination with the Churros, I actually managed to wipe out all the Raspberries and Strawberries in the dipping saucer.
While we did not have any drinks, Mischief is a place that we felt that the food pretty much delivers, and is pretty worth the money given that our bill came without service charge and GST. Food was pretty decent, though there are some misses such as the waffle. Overall it is a nice place for a group gathering, especially for those who are looking for somewhere to drink and have some light bites especially with such a centralized location. A place that would soon be a popular hangout in the near future.
