#6 Letter Coffee – Tanjong Katong Road

Taking over the former premises of now-defunct Burp Kitchen and Bar at Tanjong Katong Road is #6 Letter Coffee and #8 Letter ManiPedi; a cafe-cum-nail salon-cum-event space concept.

Situated in a shophouse space along Tanjong Katong Road near a bus stop, #6 Letter Coffee is a spot that is hard to miss, considering how it is located at the corner unit with a pretty big signboard hanging over the facade of the shop. Going into the cafe, the space is pretty well-lit; simply-designed, the cafe is decked pretty much in white and wooden accents, with the counter featuring a white-washed brick texture with a wooden surface whilst the furnishings come mostly with wooden trim and other colours to provide a contrast from all the white and wood going on; a bit of a European touch. The cafe also attempts to spruce up its space with the use of plants which makes the cafe seem closer to nature. Tables are also well-spaced from each other to provide a sense of privacy in between different groups of diners as well. Skimming through the menu, #6 Letter Coffee serves up various categories of food; “Breakfast & Brunch”, “Main”, and “Dessert & Sides”; the menu largely comprising of typical cafe fare such as egg-based dishes, meats, and pasta whilst also offering various finger food items to share at the table. Beverages include specialty coffee, as well as frappe options amongst various other options available on the menu.

(6nature Wings)

Ordering a side to share around the table, we went for the 6nature Wings; an item that features Soy-Sauce Mid-Wings topped with Cashew Nuts. The 6nature Wings were pretty delicious; fried till golden brown and all crisp, the fried mid-wings are drenched in a thick and sticky soy-sauce for a sweet-savoury note. The meat was juicy, tender and succulent, coming off from the bones easily, while the cashew nuts helped to add some crunchiness to the dish for some contrast. A pretty delicious item to share across the table; one which is certainly worthy of its signature title.

(Fruity French Toast)

Going for an item off the “Breakfast & Brunch” section of the menu, we went for the Fruity French Toast considering how the other items that we are ordering on the menu were savoury dishes. The Fruity French Toast consists of elements such as a fresh mix of berries, strawberries, and kiwi, with maple syrup, served on the side. An item that carries no surprises, the Fruity French Toast serves as a safe option for those who wish to go for a sweet brunch item; the two slices of bread being soaked in egg mixture which was soft and pillowy, while the berries provide a tart contrast to the sweet maple syrup. We felt that the French toast could be further improved on if the toast was soaked longer in the egg mixture to further be absorbed into the bread for better texture. Still, a pretty comforting option, though one that can also be easily prepared at home.

(Smoked Duck Carbonara)

Skimming through the menu, an item that caught our attention from the “Main” section was the Smoked Duck Carbonara. Being all comforting like what one would have expected from a usual plate of Carbonara, the spaghetti was done al-dente, carrying a good bite without being brittle. Laced in a rich cream sauce, the sauce was not overwhelming nor excessive; the cream sauce being sufficiently thick whilst also coming with bits of bacon for a savoury note. Enhancing the dish even further is the Slices of smoked duck; a pretty generous portion comes served with the pasta which provides a savoury, meaty bite that is typical of cured meat. An item that is pretty safe yet satisfying to have; a comforting item to go for that would go well with most here.

(Flat White)

Going for the usual cuppa, we went for the Flat White here; a medium-bodied cuppa with an earthy and nutty flavour profile, the cuppa was surprisingly well-pulled with a clean finish and pretty smooth and creamy overall. A good cuppa that would work well for an afternoon perk-me-up.

Given how the hype for cafes seem to be very much over, #6 Letter Coffee feels like as though they had joined the cafe scene pretty late, especially considering how the most other places opening these days seem to center their concept around a specific style of cuisine rather than to ride on the third wave coffee movement. No doubt there are some items which we felt could be less run-off-the-mill and could do with more heart in its presentation and execution (i.e. the Fruity French Toast), but they do seem to offer some items which are very well-executed and pretty satiating; fitting for a cafe of its style. Given its location, #6 Letter Coffee would work as a great hangout especially for those who are living within the vicinity of Katong; a location away from the hustle and bustle of the more crowded locations around it or even town. A great space to spend lazy afternoons away with a friend for a quality catch-up, or even for some quiet time to get some work done.
