MediumRare by Saveur – Century Square

Saveur had recently revamped some of their concepts, especially with the re-branding of some of their concepts into FrapasBar.

While the re-branding of FrapasBar from Saveur at the Century Square did not last long, the location had seen its third concept under the Saveur brand; the space had since been converted into MediumRare by Saveur. Retaining all of the furniture and fittings of Saveur/FrapasBar previously, MediumRare by Saveur aims to serve up a simpler menu of Western fare as compared to the French-inspired menu of Saveur and the sharing plates-based menu of FrapasBar. Placing their focus on various cuts of beef, MediumRare by Saveur offers diners yet another choice of destination for wallet-friendly steaks; the menu also offers a range of other dishes such as rice bowls, poultry & fish, pasta and desserts, while the choices of beverages range from non-alcoholic options such as juices, soft drinks and coffee to alcoholic options such as beers and wines.

(Flat Iron Steak with Beef Fats Fried Rice, Creamed Spinach)

Given MediumRare by Saveur’s focus on serving up different cuts of steak, we went for the Flat Iron Steak; one of the most affordable cuts available on their menu. All steak orders come with a free choice of sauce for the steak, whilst also allowing patrons to go for two sides — our choice of sides being the Creamed Spinach and Beef Fats Fried Rice and our choice of sauce being the Cafe de Paris. Coming in a 250g portion, the Flat Iron Steak was considerably tender without needing much of a chew; came seasoned with pepper and salt which helps to ante up the flavours of the meat. The Cafe de Paris sauce is essentially a knob of herb butter; garlicky and buttery, which matched the meat well for those who prefer something a little more savoury. Whilst the Beef Fat Fried Rice sounded like a great option on the menu for a choice of carb, it felt as though it could do being a little greasier for better texture, though it did taste much like a comforting and fairly savoury rendition of an egg fried rice. Creamed spinach offered no surprises; yet another comforting side which features spinach cooked in cream — great, though nothing much to shout about.

(Duck Confit with Onion Rings and Mac & Cheese)

Being an establishment opened by Saveur, we also could not give the Duck Confit a miss. Also coming with a choice of two sides, we went for the Onion Rings and Mac & Cheese for our order. The Duck Confit was decent; the skin was fairly crisp, while the duck confit did feature meat that was easy to pull apart and came off easily from the bones. The meat was also sufficiently savoury without being overly salty, though could certainly be a little more juicy and succulent. Otherwise, the side of Onion Rings came with no surprises; rings of onion that comes deep-fried in a crisp batter, the onion rings were not glistening in oil, while the Mac & Cheese was comforting without being too heavily cheesy, unlike the variants which use nacho cheese sauce instead.

(Vanilla Crepes Cake)

Going for a dessert, we went with the Vanilla Crepes Cake; essentially a Mille Crepe layered with Vanilla pastry cream. The Vanilla Crepes Cake was well-made; the cake holding up fairly well to the fork without sliding into a mess — the layers also being distinct whilst the pastry cream also carrying an intense and fragrant aroma of vanilla with vanilla beans speckled across the pastry cream. A pretty great dessert to end off the meal with.

Overall, we felt that our meal at MediumRare by Saveur is pretty decent; no doubt that there is some room for improvement for some items, but the mains were considerably well-priced given its quality such as the Flat Iron Steak. That being said, we felt that they could have better managed the ambience of the space; while we could not really blame them for the fumes that carried a stench from their neighbours, the door being left ajar did allow the fumes to enter the restaurant which affected the dining experience quite a little. That being said, given how the Saveur brand is most known for serving up satisfying French cuisine at an affordable price, MediumRare by Saveur does stick to that concept fairly well; a place that would work well for a convenient hangout in the heartlands for wallet-friendly steaks of a decent quality that corresponds well with the price.
