(Closed) Biseryu Japanese Cuisines – Far East Plaza

(Biseryu Japanese Cuisines had since ceased operations in Singapore.)

There seems to be an endless stream of Japanese restaurants opening around the island for a while; one of the latest being Biseryu Japanese Cuisines, hidden in an obscure corner of Far East Plaza.

Being a franchise of Deli’s Kitchen, which operates its own space at Sunshine Plaza along Bencoolen Street, Biseryu Japanese Cuisines is situated at a lesser-known corner within Far East Plaza that had opened its doors fairly recently. Being a little more spacious than Deli’s Kitchen, the space is considered mid-sized being slightly more spacious than the almost hole-in-the-wall set up of Deli’s Kitchen, whilst also being more well-renovated considering the numerous Japanese touches from the choice of furnishings to the curtains within the restaurant. Operating under pretty much the same model as Deli’s Kitchen, Biseryu Japanese Cuisines is almost like a collective of different Japanese brands all under one roof; featuring different forms of Japanese cuisines under different brand names, the menu of Biseryu Japanese Cuisines, whilst less diverse than that of Deli’s Kitchen, still consist of a wide variety of items ranging from burgers to Tonkatsu and even Ox Tongue as well as lamb dishes. A number of side dishes are also available for sharing, whilst the list of beverages available includes soft drinks, coffee, and tea amongst other options.

(Fried Camembert Cheese – Medium)

One of the items that we found ourselves ordering pretty often recently would be fried cheese; with that, it is little wonder that we ended up with the Fried Camembert Cheese from the “sides” section under “appetizers”. These were available in Medium and Large portions; we opted for the Medium portion for our order. Going for the nuggets of fried cheese, the exterior is coated with a golden brown batter; crisp, yet light, the batter encases the melted, oozy Camembert that was smooth, creamy, and immensely pungent. A rather dominant flavour on its own, the Fried Camembert Cheese would work well with cheese lovers who love heavy-tasting cheeses; its savouriness being so alluring that we just could not stop. A great item to share at the table which helps to start off the meal on a positive note.

(Roast Beef Don – 100g)

One of the few items that we could not get enough of at Deli’s Kitchen would be their Roast Beef Don; the same is also available at Biseryu Japanese Cuisines and is available in a variety of sizes (100g, 150g, 200g, and 250g portions). Going for the “Small” portion at with 100 grams of beef, the Roast Beef Don comes with a mound of rice that is “wrapped” with roast beef on the exterior, topped off with a sous-vide egg whilst coming with greens on the plate. Whilst not being the most visually appealing rendition of the Roast Beef Don considering the portion of greens served along with it, the Roast Beef Don is an item that is pretty well-executed here; there is nothing not to like with that thinly-sliced beef that is absolutely tender that is all pink, yet carries no hint of gaminess at all. Portioning out the delicious slices of beef along with the rice beneath, the short-grained rice was pearly and drenched with an ample amount of savoury sauce, helping to amplify the flavour profiles by giving a slight contrast, whilst introducing a light hint of spiciness that should be pretty manageable to those who are able to take moderate amounts of spiciness a slight tingle to the tastebuds. That helps to cut through the meatiness of the Roast Beef Don, while the sous-vide egg over the top helps to create a silkier texture with its oozy yolk and runny whites. Overall, pretty much what we had remembered about the variant that we have had at Deli’s Kitchen and something which we would certainly crave for considering how we just simply felt like we had not enough of.

(Kagoshima Aged Pork Loin Katsu Don)

We also tried the Kagoshima Aged Pork Loin Katsu Don; despite being labeled as a don, the presentation was seemingly more like any other Tonkatsu dish that is being served atop a portion of rice. Whilst recommended by the staff for its slightly more tender texture against the Iberian Aged Tenderloin Cutlet that we initially wanted to go for, we felt that the Kagoshima Aged Pork Loin Katsu Don while being absolutely crisp with its Panko crumbs on the exterior, was a little too fatty and even slightly porky at times for our liking. Still, the textures are pretty great, considering how the slab of pork does come with a good balance of fatty parts and leaner parts; the latter still being more prominent than the latter in terms of texture, which created a good bite. The rice comes drenched in almost the same sauce as that which came with our Roast Beef Don, though less the spiciness, while the greens are dressed with Goma dressing for a roasty, earthy and creamy note and texture.

Overall, we felt that our meal at Biseryu Japanese Cuisines was actually pretty satisfying. No doubt the prices are a bit on the steep side, especially considering its choice of location within the Orchard shopping belt which usually seems to cater more for wallet-friendly eats. That being said, Biseryu Japanese Cuisines does offer a value-for-money set lunch deal that starts from S$7.90, which would most certainly appeal to office workers in the area looking for a satisfying meal option without bursting their budget. Despite its high prices, the meats that we had were no-doubt well-executed; this was especially the case with Roast Beef Don, an item that we really appreciated be it being at Deli’s Kitchen or Biseryu Japanese Cuisines. That being said, it would be interesting to see how Biseryu Japanese Cuisines would work out in this part of town; Japanese cuisine options are aplenty, and with more established names being scattered all across this part of town, it would certainly be a challenge for Biseryu Japanese Cuisines to make their mark amidst the competition in the area. Still, a pretty worthy dining option in the area, and a place we would certainly hit again for that Roast Beef Don that they have to offer.
