(Moved) Denzy Gelato – Blk 506 Bishan Street 11

(Denzy Gelato had since ceased operations at Bishan, and is now operating out of a new space at Hougang. The address for the Hougang location can be found at the bottom of the post.)

There was a certain time where cafes situated at the foot of an HDB block was relatively in-trend; something that F&B establishments are seemingly straying away from of the late.

Situated in the heart of Bishan, Denzy Gelato is a new ice-cream parlour that takes up a shop space at the ground level of an HDB block. Denzy Gelato is conveniently located at the town centre, which makes it pretty accessible via the various public transport connections (e.g. MRT, bus interchange) available in its vicinity, though in a corner slightly away from foot traffic, giving it a more relaxed vibe. The interior is simply decorated; perhaps going towards functionality rather than style, the cafe is still pretty well-designed, carrying a dark vibe with more use of cement elements mixed with black-coloured elements and furniture with wooden accents that brings a slightly industrial look that goes against the clean, minimalistic look that cafes seemingly like to adopt of the late. Walking into the shop, patrons would be greeted by the display chiller and counter area by the left side of the shop, while the right side is occupied by the dining area; the front featuring tall tables for those who do not mind standing by the window to have their ice-cream. Denzy Gelato churns their ice-cream in-house, offering a wide variety of basic flavours as well as more unique, premium flavours for patrons to pick from; the premium flavours requiring a top-up of S$1.00 on top of the price of a basic flavour. Patrons are able to have their ice-cream served in cones or cups or pair them up with a waffle that is made-upon-order. Denzy Gelato also serves specialty coffee; a great option for folks who love having their ice-cream with coffee.

(Top: Basil, Bottom: Elderflower Mojito)

Going for two of the more unique flavours at Denzy Gelato, we went for the Double Scoop option, opting for Elderflower Mojito and the Basil flavours; the latter being a Premium option on the menu. Going for the Elderflower Mojito sorbet, the flavour comes with distinct notes of saltishness and lime; a pretty refreshing flavour considering how it is not being laced with cream, whilst being all zesty. It is noted that the Elderflower Mojito here seemingly lacks a minty flavour; a component that could probably further enhance the flavours of the sorbet even more with a cooling sensation, whilst also seemingly not heavy on alcohol, if any at all, which probably is a planned move to make the flavour kids-friendly considering their clientele within the heartlands. The Basil flavour was interesting as well; despite being an ingredient generally used for savoury dishes, the Basil flavour comes all creamy and milky at the start but is well-complimented with an aromatic note from the herb later on; pretty refreshing and well-rounded, and certainly something which we would recommend for those who are more open to trying out less conventional flavours. Other flavours worth a mention here are the Cereal Milk, the Persian Prince (which features Almond and Saffron), and Blondie Beach (comprising of elements such as White Chocolate, Lime and Salt).

(White Coffee [Regular])

Also giving their coffee a go, we opted for the White Coffee (Regular). Considering how the main focus is being placed on the ice-creams here, the White Coffee is fairly decent, with efforts being placed considering the neat latte art that they had managed to pull off; pretty decent compared to some other ice-cream parlours around. The cuppa comes with a medium body, with an earthy and roasty flavour profile.

Whilst there are still many ice-cream parlours operating within the heartlands, very few places are pretty much like Denzy Gelato. Serving up their very own ice-cream churned by themselves, one can feel the effort placed in their craft here — something which many ice-cream parlours in the heartlands lack. The flavours served at Denzy Gelato can also be said to be pretty unique as well, offering both conventional and also more adventurous flavours that are exclusive to themselves, giving Denzy Gelato a slight edge with more character as compared to other ice-cream parlours. Whilst it is hard to say that one would make a special trip all the way down for any ice-cream parlour, Denzy Gelato is certainly a place worth visiting in the area, and possibly a favourite hangout for the residents in the area.
