(Closed) Hammee’s — Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre

(Hammee’s had since ceased operations.)

Hipster hawkers are seemingly the trend of the late, considering number of young hawkerpreneurs who are opening their own stalls in hawker centres, serving up a new form of cuisine rarely found in hawker centres in the past.

Being a stall located in Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre, Hammee’s is pretty much unlike other hipster hawkers who chose to set up their stall at newer hawker centres or hawker centres in the Central Business District. Choosing to focus on western fare, Hammee’s was serving only two burgers during the day of our visit — it is noted that Hammee’s do seemingly serve up other items such as chicken wings and waffles on the menu, though they had temporarily stopped serving up those items to cope for the high demand for the burgers. The burgers at Hammee’s are no doubt affordable; priced at only $6 for a Cheeseburger or $5.50 for a Fried Chicken Burger, the prices are certainly competitive, even when compared against fast food joints these days.

(Hammee’s Fried Chicken Burger – Spicy)

Going for a portion of both burgers, the Hammee’s Fried Chicken Burger comes with an option of the “original” flavour, as well as a “spicy” version”; we opted for the latter. Coming with elements such as homemade slaw, fried chicken thigh and their signature burger sauce all sandwiched between two toasted burger buns, all burger orders come default with fries at the side. Taking a bite into the burger, one would first notice how light and fluffy the buns were; the toasted burger buns carried a crusted texture on the underside, yet not too dense and hence not too filling. In between, the homemade slaw provides a refreshing crunch, before one reaches the crispy, fried chicken thigh which is all tender, succulent and juicy; not much effort required to chew. The spiciness of the fried chicken thigh, whilst carrying a spicy kick, was pretty manageable for those who are able to tolerate moderate spiciness. The fries on the side were also crisp; well-seasoned for flavour without being soft, limp, nor overly salty. A pretty well-executed burger that works as a great option for those who do not take beef; one which is also pretty affordable as well being priced at S$5.50 nett.

(Hammee’s Signature Beef Cheeseburger – Single)

Also ordering the Hammee’s Signature Beef Cheeseburger, the burger also comes with two options just like the Hammee’s Fried Chicken Burger; instead of offering “original” and “spicy” versions, however, the Hammee’s Signature Beef Cheeseburger comes in either single patty or double patty options. We opted for the former; coming with components such as slow caramelised onions, American cheese, handmade beef patty, and pickled Jalapenos, the Hammee’s Signature Beef Cheeseburger also comes with the same toasted burger buns, Hammee’s signature sauce and fries just like Hammee’s Fried Chicken Burger. A simple, yet comforting cheeseburger, the Hammee’s Signature Beef Cheeseburger may sound like a basic burger considering the various condiments, but is one that is full of flavour and done with finesse. The handmade beef patty was in no way gamey, whilst being lightly crusted; the meat not being too crumbly, yet giving a good bite. The caramelised onions helped to add sweetness to the burger, while the pickled jalapenos provided a refreshing, crunchy tang that cuts through the meatiness and heaviness of the burger. Yet another well-put-together burger which comes with a balance of its various condiments, without being particularly messy nor heavy to have.

Serving up gourmet burgers at a pocket-friendly price, Hammee’s is certainly a hidden gem in a sleepy neighbourhood — one that is located in somewhere that is least expected, especially considering the older demographic of the population there. Hammee’s does deliver in terms of quality; whilst serving up a rather limited menu, Hammee’s had certainly gotten the basics right — the burgers being fuss-free and easy to understand, whilst nailing in on the flavours, portion size and proportions. With all these in mind, Hammee’s is off a good start; a location for burger lovers to visit, not to mention how they are pretty value-for-money — a spot that is worthy of making a special visit for.
