Hey Sugar – Keat Hong Mirage

The west side seems to have upped their game when it comes to the cafe scene; Choa Chu Kang had recently seen quite a number of ice-cream parlours open up — from Sticks N’ Stones Creamery to Hey Sugar, which is the latest addition to the area.

Situated right opposite Keat Hong LRT Station, Hey Sugar takes up a rather spacious shop space at Keat Hong Mirage; a small shopping complex that is built just in front of a newly-built cluster of HDB flats. The interior seems rather dainty, with elements such as wood and marble that co-exists with walls painted in pastel pink. Apart from serving up ice-cream in cups and cones, they also serve up waffles as well as brownies and molten lava cakes to go along with the ice-cream. They also offer a range of beverages such as coffee, tea, smoothies and frappes as well.

(Single Classic Waffle with Rock Melon ice-cream)

Since there was an ongoing set promotion, we went for the Single Waffle with Single Scoop Ice-Cream — the dessert comes paired with any of their Iced Brewed Shaken Tea of the patron’s choice. We decided to order the original Waffle (they also have Red Velvet and Charcoal available) while going for the Rock Melon ice-cream. The Rock Melon ice-cream was one of the more unique flavour they seem to carry and also left a strong impression texturally and flavour-wise; it carries that distinct flavour (and even aftertaste) of rock melon without being overly sweet. Crisp and fluffy, the waffles surpassed our expectations despite how it looked; perhaps they could look into improving the overall aesthetic of the waffle so as to better reflect the food against their overall theme.

(Strawberry Elderflower Iced Brewed Shaken Tea)

Picking an item out of their Iced Brewed Shaken Tea menu, we decided to try the Strawberry Elderflower; it carries a hint of tart berry Flavour with a hint of floral fragrance within — overall a rather light drink that would work well with heavier tasting ice-cream flavours.

Overall, Hey Sugar does feel like it has a bit of potential, but heavily needs refining. For instance, the ice-cream felt generally lacklustre save for a couple of flavours (we actually liked their Lychee Rose Sorbet though); they either felt generic in terms of flavour or could have had a better texture. The waffles also require a little bit more work in presentation; the place was decked out rather thoughtfully, but the food felt a little out-of-sync aesthetically somehow. Perhaps these are things that Hey Sugar probably needs time to work on, but it is indeed a decent hangout for folks around the Keat Hong neighbourhood — after all, the West still seems to lack decent cafes and ice-cream places. Hey Sugar may not be a must-visit spot on everyone’s list, but it is a place that Keat Hong folks may be happy to have in their neighbourhood.

    Appalling service.

My friend and I reached the cafe at 645pm, made the order at 650pm and at 7.05pm, was told “Our policy is to not study during peak period, we did not tell you earlier bcox it was not yet crowded, please leave in 5min because now it is”.

This convo took place when i had just finished my waffle and just started on my ice-cream cone and have not even started on my iced drink. (I ordered the set).

There must be a better and more polite way to REQUEST paying customers to vacate their seats, instead of ORDERING us to leave within such a short timeline. The policy should also be made known to us BEFORE we have paid for our meal isn’t it? Take note that she also mentioned that it was not crowded when we came in to the store, now that it is and we have to leave within their (i must say pretty unreasonable) 5min timeline.

And their version of “peak period” is having at least 4 empty tables.

    Definitely not returning.
