Opened to much hype at CHIJMES just opposite Whitegrass is The Glasshouse: Specialty Coffee and Toast Bar.
The Glasshouse is not located in a standard shop unit at CHIJMES; instead, it is a newly-built free-form structure built with a frame and boards that are placed at a previously vacant spot in the plaza. Furnished with lots of wood and decorated with plants that make the cafe feel close to nature, The Glasshouse is bound to be an Instagrammer enclave with loads of natural lighting that shines through from the windows that surround the interior. We visited The Glasshouse during their soft launch phase when they were only serving cakes and pastries alongside coffee, though artisanal toasts would be available once they kick into full operations for those looking for something more brunch-centric.
(Cinnamon Roll)
We were recommended the Cinnamon Roll which was pretty decent. It was not too sweet, yet the swirls carried a light hint of cinnamony sweetness that was pretty alluring amidst the flaky pastry.
(Banana Cake)
We also went for the Banana Cake — a moist cake that is similarly not too sweet; carries a lingering banana flavour that works great with a cup of coffee on the side. The cream cheese frosting that is piped over the top still maintained its moisture — creamy and luscious, while providing a rich yet subtle tartness that cuts through the light sweetness from the banana that adds another dimension of flavour to the cake.
Flat White was brewed from the Lucky Bastard blend roasted by Common Man Coffee Roasters — the cuppa was smooth and creamy with a light body. It carried earthy and nutty notes — a very soothing cup of coffee that works great as a leisurely cuppa during mid-day.
Just from how it looks, The Glasshouse is a clear winner — the interior and environment gives a different vibe from most cafes in Singapore; it has the ideal image of a cafe that we often see from those overseas on Instagram with its decor and fittings despite the small space that it occupies. Service is also pretty friendly and hospitable with the staff behind the counter being pretty chirpy despite being the only staff around. While we are unable to try the hot food offerings during our visit, the cakes and pastries are pretty decent — would certainly be looking forward to the launch of the full menu. The Glasshouse is a place to keep a look out for, and somewhere that would most certainly be found on the Instagram “explore” page very often.
