New to the Ann Siang neighbourhood, Fat Saigon Boy offers affordable Australian-Vietnamese fare to the office workers around the CBD area.
Fat Saigon Boy is decked in vibrant colours, with two different dining areas throughout the shophouse. The main dining area features bright yellow chairs, wooden tables and wallpaper featuring white bricks while the “al-fresco” dining area features an enclosed dining area which is lit up by natural lighting with pink walls. For lunch, the menu features a selection of sides (or Tapas), with different categories of mains and drinks to choose from. A set lunch deal runs for $13+ (GST, but no service charge), where one would get to enjoy any single-portion side, any main with iced tea.
Sounding pretty interesting on the menu was the Fried Soft Shell Crab Sliders. Using fried mantou buns, it encases a crisp, deep-fried soft shell crab flavoured with green chilli and lime. It was also noted that one of the elements inside the mantou carried a light tartar sauce-like taste which lifted the flavours of the bun.
For myself, I have decided to go for the Skewered Vietnamese Chicken, which features deep-fried chicken in a savoury-sweet sauce with sriracha on the side. This dish comes with peanuts on default, which I have requested to get them to be excluded upon ordering (they do understand about peanut allergies and are quite flexible with such arrangements; this is also mentioned in their menu as well).
My dining partner had their BBQ Lemongrass Pork Banh Mi. Condiments were good; the pork were sliced big enough for texture and flavour, while accompanied with dressing and pickled vegetable which went pretty well with the pork, the bread felt a little dense and stiff, coming in a size that was rather huge as opposed to the usual which is easier to fit in the mouth for easy consumption. Perhaps switching out their bread with a lighter and crispier version might improve this dish overall.
– We have been told by a Burpple user that the bread used for their Banh Mi during their visit was not their usual bread as their baker had went for a break for Chinese New Year, so what we have tasted is not really the actual representation of their usual Banh Mi.
Pho is one of the most common dishes to find in Vietnamese restaurants in Singapore, but its one of the rare times we have found Duck Pho in the menu. Featuring both roasted duck and smoked duck slices into the Pho, roasted duck helps add a little meaty texture into the pho. Broth was rather clear, clean-tasting and refreshing with every single spoonful while the rice noodles were cooked just right; not too mushy nor too firm. Definitely preferred the pho over the banh mi any time.
Situated within the CBD amongst other fancy eateries, Fat Saigon Boy does provide office workers around a good option for lunch; we have caught many office workers both dining-in here as well doing takeaways. The food here is decent for its price range, and some of their Tapas menu items are pretty unique and unlike the usual Vietnamese fare outside. Sure, there are certain misses, such as the Banh Mi, but items such as the pho leaves one filled up and satisfied. For those looking for an affordable Vietnamese meal at Ann Siang Road with a slightly more flexible budget, Fat Saigon Boy is one place to consider hitting, especially with their set lunch deal.
