(The Dispensary had since ceased operations.)

The Dispensary is a patisserie that is located at Tiong Bahru Road had opened its doors for quite some time now.

Having taken over its premises from a medical hall, it had preserved some if not most of the features of its previous tenants. From the external features all the way to the classic mirror with Chinese characters on the side and the medicine cabinets on the ground level intact, The Dispensary feels like a mix of the old and new coming in a harmonious blend. The menu had been broadened ever since they first opened; apart from cakes they also do serve mains such as all-day breakfast, and a few other varieties of sandwiches.

(Carrot Cake)

Being known for their cakes, I decided to go for a single slice of their Carrot Cake. Tall and multiple layers of Carrot Cakes are the norm now, but The Dispensary keeps it single at just a single layer with cream cheese atop. Served chilled, this is by far one of the most moist Carrot Cakes I have had. Personally, I felt that nuts seemed to be clustered near the back and not really evened out, and the cinnamon felt a tad strong. The lack of a layer of cream cheese in the middle also made it seemed a bit imbalanced. I guess I was particularly picky that day though; the cake should be pretty decent for most especially with that level of moistness it had.

(Sea Salt Caramel)

Similarly, the Sea Salt Caramel cupcake was just of the right density, but less wet inside. Cake base seemed to be a Red Velvet, less the cream cheese. This resulted in a light hint of cocoa in the cake. Complimenting it was a layer of cream cheese and sea salt caramel cream atop, which did not tasted too bitter nor scorched, but a nice balance of sweet and salty.

If you are looking for great cakes in the area with lots of atmosphere, The Dispensary is one of the places that can be in consideration. The environment is beautiful, yet rustic at the same time. It is also worth to commend on how this place is preserved; many cafes only keeps the external facade, stripping off the interior to suit their design themes. The Dispensary tries hard however to integrate the medicine hall to the cafe instead. I might come back for brunch soon, though I guess it could be quite a while because its a bit far off from where I stay though.
