Tong Heng (东兴) – South Bridge Road

Located in the heart of Chinatown, it is hard to imagine the brand name of Tong Heng being around for more than 80 years. Currently, it has a shop with a small seating area to allow customers to consume traditional desserts outside. Apart from that, their iconic pastries are also popular with their customers for takeaways.

(Famous Egg Tart)

The most popular pastry of all time for Tong Heng would be their Famous Egg Tart, which is widely raved and even recommended by the media. While circular egg tarts are common, Tong Heng’s come in a signature diamond shape. The crust was flaky but did not fell apart easily, and the warm egg custard was comforting without tasting milky. Definitely lived to the hype!

(BBQ Pork Bun Pastry)

We also got a BBQ Pork Bun Pastry. The crusty pastry was served as-is without any glaze and what not, and huge chunky bits of honeyed pork filled up its interior. While being sweetly marinated, some flavour from the pork was maintained to include the meaty taste in it.

It is evident why Tong Heng still remains popular till this date; it sticks to the traditional recipes with nostalgic flavour, where old customers would be kept, but at the same time attracting a lower age group as well. For those who yearn for a blast to the past, this is a place that you have to check out.
