Yellow Submarines – Blk 177 Toa Payoh Central

Amidst all the hype about Tim Ho Wan’s opening at Plaza Singapura, Yellow Submarine, a humble local fast food restaurant had opened in the bustling neighbourhood of Toa Payoh Central.

This brand new fast food outlet sells Cheesesteaks; something that is rarely found in Singapore at affordable prices. According to them, the Yellow Submarine was created after numerous taste testing of bread, a search for the best tasting cheese out of 50 cheeses and the perfect fries, which really sounds like a whole lot of effort to find the best formula of a chessesteak of their own. Apart from those, they sell burgers and desserts to compliment with the meal.

(Yellow Submarines Classic)

The combo meal consists of a cheesesteak/burger with Torpedo Fries and a drink. The Yellow Submarine Classic Cheesesteak is probably the closest thing to the well known Philly’s Cheesesteak originating from Philadelphia. Containing beef, caramalised onions, cheese and tomato sauce (?), it is a combination that would not go wrong. They were quite generous with the ingredients. I particularly loved how the cheese melted which was gooey, though makes it slightly messy to eat. Quite unfortunately though the beef was slightly tough in certain areas and was quite difficult to bite. The caramalised onions did their job by giving the cheesesteak a nice sweet flavour.

(Torpedo Fries)

The Torpedo Fries are cheese fries with a fancier name. It comes standard with all combo meals so there isn’t a need to top-up for s meal just to get it. The fries are just thick, crispy and fluffy. They were very generous with the cheese sauce, and is served hot and it was gooey and just sinful in the nicest way. Definitely one of the best cheese fries I had for now.

At $9.90 for a combo meal, it is pretty on par with what other fast food chains offer. Of course, one can argue that they could probably get a meal at a restaurant at around the same price, but if you are in for some fast food that feels better than the ones we are so familiar of, why not give Yellow Submarines a try?
